Data Virtualization Day - A View from the Inside

Key users tell their data virtualization success stories

The world's largest gathering of data virtualization experts and implementers, Data Virtualization Day was held October 13 in New York City.

Sponsored by Composite Software, it drew nearly 200 attendees from over 80 different companies, along with several noted analysts.

The Place to Learn About Data Virtualization Success
At the event, this large audience was treated to real-life data virtualization case studies from executives at Bank of America, Putnam Investments and Qualcomm Incorporated.  These data virtualization champions provided insights into their business and data integration challenges, why data virtualization was the right solution and the many benefits they achieved.

In "Real Time is the Rule!," Ted Hills, Director of Enterprise Information Architecture, Bank of America, discussed the numerous motivations for real-time data processing.  He elaborated on its values and requirements as they relate to today's fast-paced and global business environment.  Ted also examined the challenges of achieving real-time data for the enterprise.  Ted closed by offering ideas and solutions, including the role of data virtualization in achieving real time as the rule.

Mark Morgan, Senior Manager, Enterprise Architecture Solutions, Qualcomm discussed how data virtualization is being used to respond quickly to changing demands for sharing business information among stakeholders in "Moving at Lightning Speed - The Impact of Data Virtualization on Agility." Mark also described how data integration is no longer the bottleneck to the business, showing real results and benefits that his company has realized.  He also provided advice on where companies might start and how they might overcome typical challenges that arise.

In"IT Performing at the Speed of Business," Arvinder Oberoi, Director of Applications, Information Services Division, Putnam Investments presented an executive-level view on today's marketing landscape in money management, and how data integration technologies, such as data virtualization, play a role in bringing firms closer to their customers.  He described how IT at Putnam meets the ever-increasing demands of the business by leveraging its wide variety of data sources (including cloud-based data) in support of real-time marketing campaigns and 360o view of customers.

In addition, attendees from nearly 50 Composite Software customers complemented the formal presentations with hundreds of peer-to-peer conversations about their data virtualization use cases, adoption strategies and best practices.

Composite Software CTO Describes Data Virtualization Future Trends
Composite Software Chief Technology Officer David Besemer also keynoted with his "Trends in Data Management and Data Virtualization" presentation.  As CTO, David is always watching industry trends, and is keen on understanding the technologies that drive the market.  He presented his views on developments in the data management space and the increasingly important role that data virtualization plays.  David also provided his perspective on the key capabilities that customers need, and his opinions on how leading vendors are meeting these demands.

Strong Analyst Participation Provides Additional Insights

Data Virtualization Day also included a keynote address from Gartner Research VP, Information Management Mark Beyer entitled "Re-Thinking Information Management Architectures-Meeting 'Big Data' Head On."

Shawn Rogers, Vice President Research, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing, Enterprise Management Associates, who led a panel discussion of Big Data and Data Virtualization at Composite Software's Customer Advisory Council on October 12.

Wayne Eckerson, Director of Research at TechTarget and President of BI Leader Consulting attended and followed the event with an seminal "Wayne's World" blog entitled Data Virtualization: The Time Has Come

Wayne Kernochan, President at Infostructure Associates LLC, a long tenured researcher on data virtualization, data federation and enterprise information integration (EII) was also on hand.
